Two Books, One Arithmetic
Daniel wrote in Babylon, in the sixth century before Christ, a captive in the court of an empire that no longer exists. John wrote on the island of Patmos, in Roman exile, roughly six hundred and fifty years later. Between them lies the entire span of classical antiquity — the fall of Babylon, the rise and fall of Persia, the conquests of Alexander, the long grip of Rome. And yet, when each of them reaches for a way to measure a span of prophetic time, they reach for the same unit: a month of thirty days, a year of three hundred and sixty.
This is not a coincidence of vocabulary. It is a coincidence of arithmetic. Both writers state the same kinds of spans — sometimes the very same span — in more than one unit, months in one verse and days in the next, years in one chapter and days in another. Every single time, the conversion comes out exact. No remainder, no rounding, no awkward fraction of a day left over. That kind of agreement, repeated across six centuries and two authors, is not something a real calendar can produce. It is the signature of a fixed, idealized unit — one built for arithmetic, not for tracking the sky.
This essay walks through every place that unit appears, in the order the ideas build on each other, and ends with the question this whole reference exists to answer: why does this 360-day year never need the kind of correction the Enoch Calendar's 364-day year requires?
A Day Counted as a Year
Before Daniel ever measures a prophecy in days that stand for years, the exchange rate is already established in the Torah — explicitly, and twice. When the spies returned from Canaan with their evil report, the LORD answered with a sentence of forty years in the wilderness, and gave the conversion rule out loud:
Ezekiel receives the identical instruction generations later, acting out the years of Israel and Judah's iniquity by lying on his side one day for each year of guilt:
Neither passage is concerned with months or years as a unit of elapsed time — both are using the day-for-a-year exchange as a tool of symbolic accounting. That is the inheritance Daniel and John are drawing on. The question this essay is actually about is what happens once that exchange gets applied not to single days, but to multi-year spans stated as months and as smaller day-counts — because that is where the arithmetic either holds or breaks.
Time, Times, and Half a Time
Twice in the book of Daniel, a span of time is given not in numerals but in an idiom: “a time, and times, and the dividing of time.” Once it describes the authority given to a power that wears out the saints of the Most High; once, seventeen chapters later, it is repeated under a heavenly oath, sworn by a being who lifts both hands to heaven and swears by Him that lives forever.
The idiom is its own small arithmetic problem: a time is one unit, times is the plural — two — and the dividing or half of a time is one-half. Add them and the figure resolves to three and a half. Three and a half of what is the question the rest of Scripture answers, and the answer is years.
On its own, this idiom could mean almost anything — idioms are notoriously resistant to precise arithmetic. What turns it into a fixed, checkable quantity is what happens when the same span shows up again, centuries later, stated in two completely different units.
The Same Span, Two Units
Revelation is where the idiom stops being ambiguous. John states the same kind of span repeatedly, and he is careless about which unit he reaches for — sometimes months, sometimes days, sometimes the same “time, times, and half a time” idiom from Daniel — as though the units were simply interchangeable. They only are if the underlying calendar is fixed.
Two consecutive verses, two different units, one span. Forty-two months in verse two; twelve hundred and sixty days in verse three. For these to describe the same length of time, a month has to equal exactly thirty days — not the twenty-nine and a half days of an actual lunar cycle, which would leave the conversion twenty days short.
The same pattern repeats two chapters later, describing the woman who flees into the wilderness:
Eight verses apart, the same ordeal is given once as a day-count and once as Daniel's idiom. Three and a half years, multiplied by a 360-day year, lands on exactly 1260 — the same number stated directly two paragraphs earlier.
And the beast of Revelation 13 is given the identical forty-two months of authority that the holy city suffered underfoot in chapter eleven — the same figure, the third time it appears in the same book.
That twenty-day gap is the whole point. John is not measuring real moons. He is converting between units of a calendar built on a flat thirty-day month, the same calendar Daniel had already used six centuries earlier. The exactness of the conversion is the evidence; it could not happen by accident.
Two Waypoints, Forty-Five Days Apart
Daniel closes his final vision with two numbers that, on the surface, look unrelated to the 42-month, 1260-day figures already established. They are not. They are the same calendar, used for a finer measurement.
1290 divides by 30 into exactly 43 months — three years and seven months, with nothing left over. 1335 lands forty-five days — a month and a half — beyond it, at 44.5 months, or three years, eight months, and fifteen days. Two waypoints, one verse apart, separated by a span that is itself a clean half-month on the same fixed calendar.
Nothing about 1290 or 1335 is a round number of years on its own. What makes them legible at all is the same thirty-day month every other figure on this page depends on.
Weeks of Years: The Seventy Weeks
The largest application of this calendar in Scripture is also the most structurally distinct. Daniel 9 does not give a number of days or months directly — it gives a number of weeks, and the chapter itself makes clear these are weeks of years, not weeks of days, divided into three blocks: seven weeks, sixty-two weeks, and one final week.
Seventy weeks of years is 490 years. The first sixty-nine — the seven plus the sixty-two — total 483 years, and converting that span into days uses exactly the same 360-day year as every figure already covered:
The historical anchoring of that 173,880-day span — where it starts, and what date it lands on — is its own subject and is worked out in full elsewhere on this site. What belongs here is narrower: the chapter's internal arithmetic, weeks of years multiplied into a day-count, only closes evenly because the year inside it is the fixed 360-day year, the same one Revelation will use six hundred years later.
Why It Never Needs a Leap Week
Every figure above converts exactly — months to days, days to years, years back to months — with nothing left over, ever. That is not a property real calendars have. The Enoch Calendar, built to track the actual tropical year of 365.2422 days, has to insert an occasional seven-day leap week or its dates would slowly drift away from the spring equinox. A real lunar month, at 29.53 days, does not divide evenly into a year of any length. Neither of those calendars could produce the clean conversions this essay has just walked through.
Forty-two real lunar months run to roughly 1240 days — twenty short of Revelation's 1260. Three and a half real tropical years run to roughly 1278 days — eighteen over. Daniel and Revelation only land on the same number, every time, because neither is measuring the real moon or the real sun.
The reason is structural, not coincidental. The Enoch Calendar's 364 days and its leap week exist to do a job the prophetic year is never asked to do: keep a lived calendar — one with a Nisan 1 that falls every year, that real people mark real feasts against — locked to the real sky. The 360-day prophetic year is never used that way. It appears only to convert a single stated span — a reign, an ordeal, a desolation — into a day-count, once, and then the conversion is finished. There is no second year to track, no equinox to stay aligned with, nothing to drift. A unit that is never reused for a second cycle has nothing to correct.

That is the whole answer to the question this essay set out to address. The 360-day year is not a less accurate version of a real calendar. It is not a calendar at all, in the sense of something kept running year after year. It is a fixed exchange rate — thirty days to a month, twelve months to a year — used exactly the way Numbers 14 and Ezekiel 4 first used the day-for-a-year principle: as a tool for converting one stated quantity into another, with no remainder, because none was ever allowed to exist.

Daniel and Revelation, six centuries apart, both measure prophetic spans on a fixed calendar of 30-day months and 360-day years.
